Restoring working lands after wildfire

  • Post-fire clean-up and mitigation

THE OPPORTUNITY

New value in your burned trees

Catastrophic tree loss can cause a lot of problems. Instead of burning your fire-killed trees, we can bury them. We can help recover your land, lower fire danger, and make your land safer for cattle and people.

How we work

We use trees lost to wildfire right where we’re working.

This reduces future fire risk and improves functionality of your working lands.

We make sure each project fits your land.

We work with you to identify a suitable location. When done, we restore the ground to its natural shape and revegetate with native species.

We team up with local contractors.

Each project is carefully engineered and implemented to minimize impact on
your land, working with local contractors who know the terrain best.

I’d like to share with anyone who is a landowner that’s had extreme losses through fire like we have — there is help out there. Mast was exactly what we needed.

  1. We use fire-killed trees from nearby. This cleans up the property, lowers fire danger, and helps the land recover.
  2. The wood is buried in a chamber with little oxygen. This keeps it from rotting and releasing harmful gases.
  3. The site is protected long-term. We only need light check-ins with simple tools to make sure everything stays safe.
  4. The project restores your land. We'll replant appropriate grasses as well as hard and soft wood species appropriate for the land use and ecosystem. We're the only restoration company vertically integrated with two of the largest and longest operating nurseries in the West.

Access
Grant Mast long-term, periodic access to the burial site for monitoring. All visits are coordinated in advance with landowner.
Support project integrity
Your land remains yours. We only ask that for 100 years the project site is left alone—no digging or planting big trees that could reach the chamber.
After the work is done
Think of the site like a buried septic tank, once it’s in, it stays out of sight and out of the way. The land on top can still be used for grazing, wildlife, or recreation, with the ground shaped back to how it was before.
Common Questions

Your questions, answered

This may sound simple, and the concept is. But there is more to it to ensure highest quality. We invite you to connect with us to discuss if it's a fit for your property.

  • These projects are funded by private buyers who pay landowners for practices that keep carbon in the ground and improve working lands. We can also help look into government grants or other support if it’s a good fit.

  • Our forestry team will work with you to create a custom restoration plan that meets your objectives. We handle the end-to-end process of finding seed, growing seedlings, and replanting with our two nurseries, Silvaseed and Cal Forest.
