The First Biomass Burial + Reforestation Project to Receive a BeZero Rating

BeZero Carbon assigned the Gentry Ranch Project a ‘BBBe’ ex ante Rating, indicating a moderate likelihood of achieving 1 tonne of CO2e avoidance or removal.
The BBBe rating reflects the project’s high standalone carbon rating (‘a’) combines with a high likelihood of successful project execution (‘a’).

At Mast project site, Feather River Dome, CA, fire suppression led to dense forests that burned intensely in 2020, destroying most native seeds. Four years on, choked with dead wood, it struggles to regenerate.
THE PROBLEM

When severe wildfires burn through forests, they leave behind fields of unusable dead trees. This becomes a hazard, releasing carbon, blocking restoration, and fueling more fires.

THE APPROACH

By burying wildfire-ravaged trees on-site, we create a carbon sink that funds restoration of Western forests.

approach-02

Biomass Burial

We turn unusable wood from wildfire-ravaged forests into a durable carbon sink through strategic biomass burial, accelerating your path to net-zero.

approach-03

Reforestation

We reforest the same landscape, leaving critical habitat for wildlife. Restoring biodiversity and creating resilient forests for future generations.

HOW IT WORKS
slide-00
Restorative Carbon Removal by Mast
A new approach to nature-based carbon removal, combining biomass removal with reforestation to achieve near-term goals and enable long-term restoration.
slide-01
1. Sustainable Biomass Sourcing
We source wood from trees killed by wildfire at the location of our projects. This prevents emissions, reduces fire risk, and funds forest recovery.
slide-02
2. Careful Site Selection & Engineering
Our team identifies optimal burial sites. We use specialized systems to store carbon,  underpinned by sound and rigorous scientific research.
slide-03
3. Verified Carbon Removal
Carbon removal is certified at burial completion. Our rigorous monitoring and testing validate the integrity of our process for at least 100+ years.
slide-04
4. Restoration for Lasting Impact
We partner with communities to collect native seed and grow seedlings that are appropriate for each project. We restore biodiversity and ensure long-term stewardship of the land for ecological recovery and resilience.

Every Partnership   Plants a Seed

When you choose Mast, you're not just buying carbon credits — you're funding the reforestation of Western US lands and restoring native ecosystems.

  • We’ve already restored thousands of acres of land across the Western United States and planted millions of seedlings that will sequester hundreds of thousands of tonnes of carbon from the atmosphere.

Join Mast and the local community in restoring 2,543 acres at Sheep Creek Ranch.

    Watch the 90-second video

  • Our restoration projects are meticulously monitored and verified using a range of measurements and analyses, including:

    1. Ongoing monitoring of subterranean burial environment using low-cost sensors for CO2, O2, CH4, temperature, humidity, pressure, and pH.
    2. Above-ground monitoring for CO2 and CH4 emissions with soil flux chamber.
    3. Ongoing monitoring of soil settlement, surface vegetation, soil carbon recovery, and vault integrity via periodic site visits and surficial survey.
  • We believe in transparency and collaboration. You'll receive access to project data, regular updates on our progress, and even media assets that you can use to share your own impact story.
  • Absolutely! We understand that everyone has different goals. We'll work closely with you to create a carbon offset plan that aligns with your specific needs and objectives.
  • We deliver these high-quality CDR credits in conjunction with reforestation of lands ravaged by wildfire.

These fire-impacted project areas contain substantial volumes of charred wood that were not fully consumed by the fire – the majority of which must be removed as it represents a future fire risk. The fire-damaged wood is not merchantable, so the baseline no-intervention method of disposal is pile-burning, which creates an immediate and near-term release of carbon emissions. The opportunity to instead utilize this charred biomass to create high-quality CDR credits through biomass burial is compelling and additional.
