Discover Henry Creek
When the 2020 Beachie Creek Fire swept through the Henry Creek watershed, it burned tens of thousands of acres of mature Douglas-fir forest and hardwood-rich riparian areas. Located in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains near Molalla, Oregon, this watershed serves as a water source for the downstream communities that include the capital city of Salem and provides invaluable ecosystem services of wildlife habitat, carbon sequestration, and recreation opportunities.

Site Visit
Five years after the planting efforts began, Mast went back to see how the seedlings were doing.
CO-BENEFITS
Critical habitat connectivity for forest wildlife and threatened species, now protected in perpetuity
32 miles of creek span the project area—headwaters that support juvenile salmonid habitat for the Upper Willamette River ESU Chinook Salmon and DPS Steelhead Salmon. The return of these species carries profound cultural and subsistence significance to the area’s native communities, whose livelihoods, health, and history are inextricably linked to the salmon runs.
Restoring Biodiversity
Culturally Significant Area
The Molalla Watershed is already showing encouraging signs of ecological recovery. Local communities have reported the return of species with important conservation and cultural significance in this new early-seral conifer forest.

SPOTLIGHT
Reforestation Success
Reforestation efforts began in 2021 with EFM Investments & Advisory and Mast working together to re-establish native forest cover and help the site recover with greater resilience to future climate stress.
Seeding by Drone
Henry Creek was the first project site for Mast’s proprietary drone-based enhanced seeding technology. Mast deployed more than 1.2 million seeds across nearly 300 acres using this new technology.
Seedings Planted by Hand
More than 825,000 seedlings were planted across the entire project area using traditional methods over the following two years.

THE REFORESTATION GAP
Wildfires are increasing faster than reforestation can keep pace
If there was never another wildfire, it would take more than 50 years to restore what has already burned beyond the point of natural regeneration. By building the reforestation supply chain with its nurseries and unlocking carbon-financed pathways to fund restoration, Mast is changing this trajectory.
