Henry Creek

Reforestation Project
Clackamas County, Oregon

Discover Henry Creek

When the 2020 Beachie Creek Fire swept through the Henry Creek watershed, it burned tens of thousands of acres of mature Douglas-fir forest and hardwood-rich riparian areas. Located in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains near Molalla, Oregon, this watershed serves as a water source for the downstream communities that include the capital city of Salem and provides invaluable ecosystem services of wildlife habitat, carbon sequestration, and recreation opportunities.

OCTOBER 2025

Site Visit

Five years after the planting efforts began, Mast went back to see how the seedlings were doing.

From top left: The Beachie Creek fire left a deeply burned landscape, devoid of viable tree seed supply and newly exposed to the elements, the steep terrain made traditional replanting hazardous work; an established ponderosa pine as seen in October 2025 with at least three years of new growth; a short film by Mast of the (unplanned) trek in to see the project area by foot.

Supporting high‑quality forest carbon projects like Henry Creek directly advances the Arbor Day Foundation’s mission to inspire people to plant, nurture, and celebrate trees. This project shows what’s possible through strong, values‑aligned partnerships, and highlights the essential role innovative climate finance plays in unlocking long‑term funding for forest restoration that benefits the climate, communities, and ecosystems.

CO-BENEFITS

Critical habitat connectivity for forest wildlife and threatened species, now protected in perpetuity

32 miles of creek span the project area—headwaters that support juvenile salmonid habitat for the Upper Willamette River ESU Chinook Salmon and DPS Steelhead Salmon. The return of these species carries profound cultural and subsistence significance to the area’s native communities, whose livelihoods, health, and history are inextricably linked to the salmon runs.

Restoring Biodiversity
In addition to carbon removal, the project supports climate resilient forests that improve wildlife habitat and soil quality, further supporting the health of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems.
Culturally Significant Area

The Molalla Watershed is already showing encouraging signs of ecological recovery. Local communities have reported the return of species with important conservation and cultural significance in this new early-seral conifer forest.

Perpetual Conservation
The conservation easement held by the Center for Natural Lands Management protects the land from development, logging, or subdivision, protecting the land for its native species and surrounding communities in perpetuity.
We're excited to see Mast and its partners complete planting and secure protection for the Henry Creek Reforestation Project, which Shopify has been supporting through our Sustainability Fund since 2022. We paid for the associated credits upfront rather than on completion of the removal to reduce the financing burden and help move the project forward, an important model in reforestation where the majority of removal takes decades.
—Mitch Selby, Shopify Sustainability Fund Lead

SPOTLIGHT

Reforestation Success

Reforestation efforts began in 2021 with EFM Investments & Advisory and Mast working together to re-establish native forest cover and help the site recover with greater resilience to future climate stress.

Seeding by Drone

Henry Creek was the first project site for Mast’s proprietary drone-based enhanced seeding technology. Mast deployed more than 1.2 million seeds across nearly 300 acres using this new technology.

Seedings Planted by Hand

More than 825,000 seedlings were planted across the entire project area using traditional methods over the following two years.

Restoring Native Species
To restore the area’s natural diversity of conifers lost in the fire, a diverse mix of native conifer species were planted through this partnership, including  Douglas‑fir and several native true firs adapted to local  site conditions.

THE REFORESTATION GAP

Wildfires are increasing faster than reforestation can keep pace

If there was never another wildfire, it would take more than 50 years to restore what has already burned beyond the point of natural regeneration. By building the reforestation supply chain with its nurseries and unlocking carbon-financed pathways to fund restoration, Mast is changing this trajectory.
